Jumpin' Jacks Baseball

The Columbia Jumpin' Jacks are one of the newest summer collegiate baseball teams, competing in the inaugural season of the Volunteer State League. The Jumpin' Jacks are one of four VSL teams in Central Tennessee and play their home games at Dave Hall Field on the campus of Columbia State Community College. The VSL is a new league that is part of a network called The Players League that also includes leagues in North Carolina, Texas, and Maine and is looking to expand to other areas in future years.

Food & Beverage 1

The concession situation at a Columbia Jumpin' Jacks game is incredibly disorganized, something that will become a common theme in this review. The team's social media says that Chick-fil-A is available for sale at all non-Sunday home games. However, when we visited on a Monday night, the Chick-fil-A was nowhere to be found. There is a concession window where kids can turn in foul balls in exchange for a snack or soft drink, but when we attempted to purchase items, this concept utterly bewildered the staff member, who had no idea how much to charge or if they accepted credit cards. While the team is new, we attended a late season game, so they had plenty of time to figure things out.

Atmosphere 2

There are sections of chairback seat down both baselines at Dave Hall Field, with a press box and concession stand directly behind home plate. The sun will set behind the third base stands in the evening, meaning it will be at your back if you're sitting on that side and may be in your eyes if you're down the first base line. There is not much going on here besides the game itself, and even that is disorganized. The team does not control the lights, which are set by timer to go on at a certain time. Unfortunately, it gets too dark to play baseball before this time, which often results in a brief delay in the game until the lights come on. Other random delays are also not uncommon in this league due to things such as late-arriving umpires. Even baseball purists may find the experience baffling.

Neighborhood 2

Dave Hall Field is located on the campus of a community college surrounded by a residential neighborhood, so there is not much to do in the immediate vicinity. There are some businesses located elsewhere in Columbia, mainly along Highway 50, but most of them are chain restaurants the likes of which dot many small towns in the South. The buffet at the Columbia Farmers Family Restaurant is one of the few exceptions.

Fans 3

The Jumpin' Jacks draw decently well, with about a hundred fans showing up to a typical game. Columbia is a small town that has had several failed attempts to support independent baseball, so the summer collegiate team coming to town this year has managed to draw some interest. There are friends and family of the players in attendance, as well as Columbia State alumni who fondly remember playing on this field, and an assortment of random locals who just want to check out a baseball game. The disorganized fashion this league operates him, with games rescheduled, delayed, or moved around with little warning, probably hurts attendance.

Columbia, Tennessee is located near Tennessee Route 50 and US Route 43, with Route 243 cutting between them to provide easier access to parts of downtown. Although it is far from any interstate, you can often make good time on the sparsely-traveled rural roads, hitting only an occasional traffic light or two when you come to a town. Once on campus, there is a large lot right next to the stadium which is more than big enough. Restrooms are located in a building in between Dave Hall Field and the Columbia State softball field, and are typically sufficient for the small crowds the Jumpin' Jacks draw.

Return on Investment 3

Tickets to Jumpin' Jacks games costs just $10, which is certainly not too expensive. However, there isn't enough here for the experience to be of a more than average value.

Final Thoughts

A Columbia Jumpin' Jacks baseball game is a pretty basic experience. You can watch a game up close to the action with a small town community feel. Unfortunately, the league and team are still getting the hang of how to operate, and that significantly hurts the experience here. We hope they return in 2027 having managed to figure things out, as the gameday atmosphere here can significantly improve if they manage to do that.
