Grays on the Road

Founded in 2005, the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League features eight teams in the Washington, D.C. metro area. One member, the DC Grays, is the second of two summer league teams by that name. The first Grays team played in the Clark Griffith League from 2006 to 2009 when the league folded, although they only played in the District for one of those years.

After an absence in 2010, the second and current version of the Grays was founded in 2011 and joined the Ripken League for the next season in 2012. The Grays played their first two seasons at Hoy Field on the campus of Gallaudet University before moving to the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Southeast D.C. in 2014.

In 2024, the Grays temporarily moved out of the District entirely while they await a new home at Catholic University in D.C. In 2024, they played at the baseball field at Prince George's Community College (PGCC for short) in Largo, Maryland. In 2025, they moved across the river to Virginia, and play their home games at Woodbridge High School in Prince William County.

The Grays nickname pays homage to the old Homestead Grays, a Negro League team that used to play in the District.

Food & Beverage 4

Concessions are sold out of a window underneath the press box at Grays games, staffed by friendly volunteers. Meals include hot dogs for $3, smoked sausages for $5, cheeseburgers for $4, cheese quesadillas for $4, and chicken quesadillas for $5. Snacks include expected things like chips and candy as well as more unusual options like potato salad, tuna salad, cole slaw, and macaroni salad. Cash and credit are both accepted here.

Atmosphere 2

There are two sets of bleachers at Woodbridge High School, one on either side of home plate. Fans tend to sit by their team's dugout - Grays down the third base line and visitors on first base. With the Ripken League covering such a small geographic footprint, many fans make the short trip to away games. Unfortunately, you will be watching the game through a metal chain link fence rather than netting. To compound the problem, the dugouts here are too small for the teams, so some players sit in a specially marked area on the field, which can partially block the view of fans in the bleachers. You just have to find a good spot and stick with it. A scoreboard in the outfield shows only the most basic information - score, count, and inning.

One interesting quirk is that during the seventh-inning stretch, they will play the little-known long-form version of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", including the obscure, long-forgotten original lyrics about Katie Casey being baseball mad.

Overall, a Grays game is a simple experience, but that isn't always a bad thing. You will hear all the chatter on the field, and get to sit very close to the action even if it can be hard to see at times.

Neighborhood 3

Woodbridge High School is located along Old Bridge Road, which is lined with shopping centers and many businesses, chain and otherwise. You will have to drive a bit to get there, and the options are typical of a suburban area. Brittany's Sports Bar and Mexican restaurant Hector's of Lake Ridge are both popular, although they will require driving a few miles to get there. Ultimately, you should find places to eat and ang out if you look hard enough, but you're going to have to drive a bit.

Fans 2

The Grays only draw a few dozen fans to a typical game. These are typically locals, and many of them are host families to the players on the team. Players come from all around the country to play in the league, and stay at the homes of local families during the season. They make up the bulk of the crowd, although there are other locals as well.

Access 3

Woodbridge High School is located a few miles off of I-95. If coming from closer to D.C., keep in mind traffic coming to Woodbridge can be absolutely terrible, especially at rush hour on a weekday but even on a Saturday night or Sunday. What would be a 40 minute drive without traffic can take two hours or more. You can bypass traffic by driving in the Express Lanes, but will pay an exorbitant toll that could easily exceed $50 at rush hour unless you have three or more people in your vehicle and an EZ-Pass Flex set to HOV road. Some GPS apps will route you into these lanes automatically - do not drive in them unless you want to pay an extremely large toll.

Your best bet once you get close is to park in the lot in between the elementary and high school. This will likely require entering the elementary school into your GPS app, although the field is officially part of the high school. You will walk all the way to the back and down a flight of steps which will take you to the field.

There are no restrooms on site, only a couple port-a-potties.

Return on Investment 5

Admission to all Grays home games is free. While most clubs in the Cal Ripken League charge a small price for tickets, free is even better. Prices at the stadium are reasonable as well, making a Grays game an excellent value.

Extras 2

Free roster cards are available by the press box.

The team holds raffles every game for a chance to win a $50 gift cards to places like Five Guys or Wawa while raising money for the team, which functions as a non-profit.

Final Thoughts

A D.C. Grays baseball game at Woodbridge High School is a pretty simple experience. Unfortunately, moving out of the District has hurt the atmosphere and experience, but as of the time of writing, they are set to move back there in 2026 into a newly renovated stadium at Catholic University. This should drastically improve the experience when it happens.
