Brand New Digs for Local High Schools
Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium in Richmond, TX opened on August 27, 2026, and serves as a home field for local high school football programs, including the Terry Rangers. The facility was built right next to Gene Tomas High School, and allows the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (LCISD) to split games between the new venue and Traylor Memorial Stadium. Previously Traylor was required to host all 7 teams for all their games, which complicated scheduling.
The facility is also used by local non-football athletic teams, such as school bands, cheerleaders, and drill teams. The facility holds around 4,500 fans at full capacity.

Food & Beverage 2
The facility doesn’t offer a ton of concession options, but there is plenty to get you through a few hours of game time. The stands on the concourse (under the grandstand) offer pizza, hot dogs, and nachos, as well as candy, popcorn, pickles, chips, and bottled water and soda. Most items are under $3, with hot dogs costing $4 and nachos costing $6.
Atmosphere 4
It is great to sit in a brand-new facility; the venue is clean and modern with very comfortable seats. And while the grandstand has bleachers seats throughout, there is generous row spacing due to the innovative double bench system, giving fans a dedicated bench for sitting and a separate lower bench to use as a footrest. This means you don’t have to sit on a bench someone else walked on, and it also means you don’t have to squeeze by people as you make your way to the concessions.
Something else I noticed which I hadn’t seen before is that both teams use their tunnels to come onto the field for the second half as well as the first half (usually the tunnels are only used in the first half). I am not sure if this is common for Texas high school football or specific to LCISD, but I thought it was a great way to help rev up fans for the second half.

Neighborhood 3
Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium is surrounded by two newly built schools, including the aforementioned Gene Tomas High School, as well as by planned communities of single-family homes. As a result there aren’t many restaurants within walking distance, but there are some nearby of the pizza, wings, and Mexican variety. The closest hotels are about 10 minutes away, including budget-friendly chains such as Home2 Suites and La Quinta.
If you are looking for something to do in town before the game or over the weekend, Fort Bend Museum in downtown Richmond chronicles the history of early Texas settlers, while George Ranch Historical Park is a 23,000-acre working ranch where you can see historic homes, eat traditional meals, and watch cowboys and blacksmiths at work.
Fans 3
The fans at Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium are a decent crowd, but since this is a shared stadium where most of the teams are local, you will likely see as many “away” as home fans. There should be plenty of crowd noise on both sides of the field, and you will see team gear stands selling merch in support of both teams.

Access 4
Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium sits about equidistant from I-10 to the north and I-69 to the southeast, about an hour south/southwest of Houston. This means you will have to take some local roads to get here, but once you arrive there is free parking right in front of the venue. Moving around the concourse is very easy as well, as there is plenty of room to accommodate the typical crowd.
As mentioned above it is easy to get to and from your seat thanks to the wide row spacing, and there should be minimal lines for the concessions as well.
Return on Investment 5
Tickets cost $6 if you buy in advance, or $8 at the door, regardless of what teams are playing that day. As mentioned above concessions are also very inexpensive, and parking is free, so all in all this is a wonderful bargain for a high school football game in a brand-new facility.
You will also enjoy some great entertainment from both of the participating schools’ bands, and see some great graphics on the large videoboard.

Extras 3
Being so close to the action is a real plus, and there are also logos on the field repping all the teams that play here. The Terry Rangers specifically have a really great western-themed dance team, who are a lot of fun to watch along the sideline during the game, and they give a great performance during halftime as well.
Final Thoughts
If you are in the area I would definitely recommend taking in a game at Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium – this facility and crowd energy are exactly what Texas High School football is all about.
