Volleyball at Clemson University was part of the expansion of women’s sports at the school in Clemson, South Carolina, following the passage of Title IX in 1972.

Named after prominent Clemson alumnus Frank Jervey, Jervey Gym opened in 1973 and has been home to Clemson Volleyball since 1979. It was also the temporary home of Clemson’s women’s basketball program while nearby Littlejohn Coliseum underwent a full renovation during the 2015-16 season. Originally built as a hub of Clemson athletics, Jervey Gym still houses many of the school’s athletic offices.

Jervey Gym underwent a full upgrade that was completed in 2025. The renovations included raising the gym’s roof by 12 feet to better accommodate volleyball.

Food & Beverage   2

Concessions at Clemson volleyball are extremely limited. Food choices consist of nachos with cheese sauce and popcorn. Chips and candy are also available, but anything of substance is noticeably missing from the menu.

Atmosphere   3

Jervey Gymnasium is part of the newly renovated Watt Family Performance and Wellness Center. The renovations gave the facility a much more modern feel, along with premium seating and improved player amenities.

A large video board on the far wall keeps track of the current match score, sets won, and timeouts. Its use, however, is somewhat limited throughout the match. Other than displaying graphics and promotional pieces, it doesn’t have much functional use during the match, given what it could do based on its size.

Downtime between sets and other stoppages in play are typically filled by the in-house DJ, DJ Sha, playing music. There are also several fan engagement activities to fill breaks in the action. The most notable pause takes place following the second set, when a student attempts to win Clemson gear on the far side of the court by hitting it with a serve.

When it comes to seating, the near-side bleachers consist of individual plastic seats with back support, while seating across the way consists of plastic bench seating without backs.

Neighborhood   4

Clemson, South Carolina, is a quintessential college town where the university is the center of most activity in the area.

College Avenue, the hub of activity on weekends and the scene of much of Clemson’s nightlife, is located just under a mile from Jervey Gym. Situated near the northern edge of campus, the area is heavily populated with an array of bars and restaurants, making it a popular destination for both pre- and post-match gatherings, especially during weekend contests. College Avenue buzzes with visitors exploring its shops, bars, and dining spots as summer turns to fall and temperatures become more tolerable.

While College Avenue has the highest concentration of popular establishments, The Esso Club, a renowned Clemson watering hole, is just a short stroll from the arena.

For barbecue connoisseurs, The Smoking Pig in neighboring Pendleton, on the way into Clemson, offers some of the best barbecue in South Carolina. The facility also has a large social area and miniature golf course. Beyond campus life, Clemson is home to Lake Hartwell, where visitors can enjoy miles of trails, water activities, and beaches.

What Clemson does seem to lack, though, is much in the way of entertainment that is not directly connected to the university. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but options can feel somewhat limited when trying to fill a large portion of time.

Fans   3

Clemson Volleyball has had periods when it hasn’t cracked the top 50 in NCAA Division I attendance. With that said, attendance numbers range from the high hundreds to a few instances of around 1,500 fans.

The student section does a good job of setting the atmosphere, and the small nature of Jervey Gym helps amplify the energy inside the building.

Weekend matches tend to bring out a crowd that fills Jervey Gym, while weekday matches can be lighter on fan support.

Access   4

Located just about 20 minutes off I-85, Clemson’s campus is easily accessible for fans traveling from Charlotte or Atlanta, with a drive of about two to two and a half hours from either city. Once on campus, parking is readily available south of Jervey Gym, either in the lot adjacent to McWhorter Stadium or across the street in the parking lot at Memorial Stadium.

The lone entrance along Perimeter Road leads into a main lobby area just outside the doors to the gymnasium, providing access to the near-side bleachers. A secondary hallway leads to seating on the opposite side of the gym. Since access to the seating areas is along the court, it may be necessary to wait until the ball is out of play before reaching a seat. It is not a major issue, but it can be a slight inconvenience.

Return on Investment   5

There is no cost to attend Clemson volleyball matches, which goes a long way toward making them a family-friendly option.

Concessions are priced as expected in comparison with most stadium events. With no charge for admission, the overall cost of attending a Clemson match remains reasonable.

Extras   3

The walls of the exterior hallway display a history of Clemson Volleyball’s conference and NCAA Tournament successes. Each match also features some type of giveaway for the first designated number of fans through the doors.

Following the tradition of Clemson’s other athletic programs, win or lose, the team gathers in front of the fans to sing the Clemson alma mater.

Final Thoughts

The newly renovated Jervey Gym provides a modern setting for volleyball, while the small venue allows the student section and other fans to have an impact on the atmosphere. Free admission also makes attending a match an easy option for families, students, or anyone looking for an inexpensive way to experience Clemson athletics.

The biggest drawback is the lack of substantial food options, but Clemson’s college-town setting provides plenty of places to eat and spend time before or after a match.

For fans already visiting Clemson or looking for an affordable college volleyball experience, a match at Jervey Gym provides an accessible way to take in Clemson athletics without the costs that larger volleyball programs elsewhere may charge.
