JetBlue Park and the Domain Name Fiasco

It seems that everyone has to have a website nowadays. Apparently someone dropped the ball (no pun intended) with the new Red Sox spring training facility, JetBlue Park at Fenway South, and failed to register jetbluepark.com for their use.

One Fort Myers resident, Eric Engelman (a Chicago Cubs fan and now apparently a Yankees fan), did not seem to forget and purchased the domain jetbluepark.com on March 29, 2011, on the day the Red Sox and JetBlue announced the deal to sponsor the park. Could the Red Sox and JetBlue pursue legal action against Mr. Engelman? According to the Boston Globe article published this morning, Master of their Domain, he might have a case to keep the name.

After the story broke yesterday about the domain name snafu, I did a little research last night at 6:30 pm EST and looked to see if there were any alternative names available such as jetblue-park.com available. Sure enough for a mere $8 I could have been sitting on what might be the best alternative to jetbluepark.com. Growing up in Boston and attending games at Fenway Park since I was little, I could not bring myself to buy the domain name and extort the Red Sox organization. If I purchased it, I would have gladly donated it to them.

I woke up this morning and was curious to see if the jetblue-park.com domain was still available. Turns out someone had purchased it between 6:30 last night and this morning. My first through was, 'did the same Cubs fan go out and buy some other domains as well?' Being the techie I am, I did I bit of research as to who owns the domain. Turns out it was purchased by a local Cape Coral, FL, resident, who did not take kindly to what Mr. Engelman did. Speaking with the resident this morning, the plan is to build a website that is going to be a lot more Red Sox friendly!

Be on the lookout for an announcement for when the Yankees or Cubs decide to build a new Spring Training facility and and Red Sox Nation may fire one back.
