Towson University officially ushered in a new era for Tiger baseball this week, honoring a Baltimore legend by dedicating the playing surface at Schuerholz Park as Brooks Robinson Field. The unveiling took place during a ceremony ahead of the Tigers' recent matchup against Stony Brook, marking a significant milestone for the program. The naming was made possible by a historic $1 million gift from the Constance and Brooks Robinson Charitable Foundation, representing one of the largest single contributions in Towson Athletics history.

The atmosphere at the ballpark was filled with nostalgia and pride as the local community gathered to celebrate the "Human Vacuum Cleaner." The dedication served as a fitting tribute to the Hall of Fame third baseman, whose legacy of excellence on the field was matched only by his reputation for humility and kindness off of it. For fans in the Baltimore area, the addition of the Robinson name to the campus landscape further cements the deep-rooted connection between the city’s professional baseball heritage and its collegiate athletic programs.

A poignant highlight of the event was the participation of Brooks David Robinson, the son of the Orioles icon and a 1983 Towson graduate. Representing the family, the younger Robinson threw out the ceremonial first pitch to kick off the festivities. In his remarks, he expressed deep gratitude for the honor, noting how overwhelming and wonderful it was to see his father’s name memorialized at his own alma mater. He emphasized that the partnership between the names Robinson and Schuerholz at one facility is a truly remarkable development for Maryland baseball.

The investment goes beyond just a new name on the scoreboard; it represents a major pillar of Towson’s $12 million "Campaign for Excellence." Alongside the new field designation, the program also unveiled the Eber Family Plaza, thanks to the generosity of alumni Mark and Jody Eber. These upgrades ensure that John B. Schuerholz Park remains a premier destination for CAA baseball, providing modern amenities for fans and a top-tier environment for student-athletes to develop their skills.

As the Tigers continue their season, Brooks Robinson Field stands as a permanent reminder of the values the late legend embodied: sportsmanship, leadership, and a commitment to the community. For those visiting Towson for a game, the venue now offers more than just collegiate athletics; it serves as a touchstone for Baltimore sports history. The Robinson family’s enduring commitment to education and teamwork will now inspire future generations of Tigers every time they step onto the dirt at Schuerholz Park.
