Coming into the 2025 season, USL League One welcomed four expansion clubs: Naples, Portland, Texoma, and Westchester SC. Westchester's arrival gave the USL a foothold in the New York City metropolitan area, a market that has since grown even further with the addition of Brooklyn FC to the USL Championship.

The Stadium at Memorial Field is a multi-purpose venue that was originally constructed in 1931, serving the Mount Vernon, New York, community as a gathering place for nearly a century. In addition to hosting high school and local sporting events, the stadium once welcomed legendary performers such as James Brown and The Jackson Five. By the 1990s, however, the facility had fallen into disrepair until a complete renovation transformed the venue. Although the nostalgic brick-and-iron grandstand gave way to modern concrete and aluminum seating, the renovation restored Memorial Field as a source of pride for the Mount Vernon community.

A tent operated by Yonkers Brewing Company offers three draft beers, along with Surfside, High Noon, canned wines, and other beverages. Nearby, Duck Donuts sells a variety of fresh donuts, as well as chips, popcorn, and other snacks.

In addition, a traditional stand built into the structure adjacent to the stadium entrance expands beyond the typical municipal stadium menu. In addition to hot dogs and fries, fans can order chicken wings, chili dogs, loaded fries, and other upgraded concessions fare.

However, the highlight of the food offerings is undoubtedly the Walter's Hot Dog truck. A northern New York City institution since 1919, Walter's serves an extensive menu of hot dogs, specialty fries, chicken fingers, floats, and desserts. Its popularity is evident, as the line often stretches well beyond the truck throughout the match.

Because Memorial Field serves as a true community venue, there is often a great deal happening beyond the soccer match itself. Fans are separated from the pitch by an eight-lane track, while the playing surface is marked for football, lacrosse, and soccer. The overlapping field markings create a visually busy playing surface that can occasionally be distracting.

The stadium itself lacks a particularly intimate feel. Behind the north goal stands a large stone retaining wall, while the south end opens toward the parking decks and shopping center across the street.

Seating consists primarily of aluminum bleachers, supplemented by a small section of chairback seats in the lower rows and a section of permanent individual seats near midfield in the upper seating area.

With all seating located on the west side of the stadium, fans attending evening matches must contend with the setting sun for a portion of the first half. On the opposite side of the field, the east sideline has been transformed into a lively social area where ticketed fans can gather, eat, and watch the match from field level.

Neighborhood   4

Memorial Field is very much an urban neighborhood stadium. While it is not located within New York City itself, the surrounding environment certainly feels like part of the greater metropolitan area. Single- and multi-family homes border the stadium to the north and east, while shopping centers, parking garages, and national retailers such as Best Buy and Target occupy the west and south sides.

The immediate area offers only a handful of dining choices, but Wolfs Lane, roughly a half mile east of the stadium, features several highly regarded local restaurants, including Wolfs Lane Delicatessen, Rockwells, and Pelham Pizza. Pizza enthusiasts may also want to venture about two miles north to Johnny's on Lincoln Avenue, home to one of the highest-rated pizzas in the area, at least according to Barstool Sports.

Although Mount Vernon itself is not a major tourist destination, its greatest advantage is proximity. New York City is only a short train ride away, making Memorial Field an easy stop as part of a larger trip to the city.

Attendance at Westchester SC matches ranks in the lower third of USL League One. The largest concentration of fans tends to gather in the social areas along the east side of the field, where conversation and socializing sometimes appear to take precedence over the action on the pitch.

Westchester's supporters group, the 914 Infantry, deserves recognition for helping create energy throughout the stadium. While their chants and drums add atmosphere, their presence tends to ebb and flow rather than providing the constant wall of sound found at some of the league's more established clubs.

Memorial Field is conveniently located just off Hutchinson River Parkway, providing easy highway access from both the northern suburbs and New York City.

Public transportation is another strength. A bus stop sits directly outside the stadium entrance, while the Pelham Metro-North station is less than a mile away. And although traffic throughout the New York metropolitan area can be heavy, parking here is surprisingly convenient thanks to the multi-level parking decks located directly across the street from the stadium.

Inside the venue, the concourse runs behind the grandstand with stairways leading to the main seating sections. Access between the two ends of the stands is somewhat restricted by the placement of the locker rooms, however, requiring fans to take alternate routes, though this rarely creates significant congestion.

Ticket prices begin at just $12 for seats in the upper corners of the grandstand, but unless the stadium approaches capacity, fans generally have plenty of room to relocate for a better view. Seats along the sidelines remain reasonably priced at around $20, while midfield and lower-level seating carry a noticeably higher premium.

Concession prices are consistent with what fans would expect at a professional sporting event. While the food trucks charge slightly more than the permanent concession stand, the improved quality and expanded menus justify the additional cost.

Outside the grandstand, fans will find several pregame activities, including an inflatable soccer target, merchandise stands, and community organization tables.

New in the 2026 season, Westchester added a mascot, Hutch the Ram, who helps bring a bit of fun to the experience, as well as being the center of attention for younger fans.

Final Thoughts

Professional soccer in the United States has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade. While Major League Soccer laid the foundation beginning in the 1990s, the USL has arguably driven the sport's most significant nationwide expansion through the continued growth of both the Championship and League One. Westchester SC represents another important step in that process, giving the league a presence in one of the country's largest and most influential media markets.

Memorial Field may not offer the purpose-built atmosphere of many newer soccer-specific stadiums, and its multi-use design does detract somewhat from the matchday experience. However, the facility succeeds in providing an affordable, accessible, and welcoming environment for professional soccer. As Westchester SC continues to establish itself within the community, both the club and the matchday atmosphere have plenty of room to grow, making Memorial Field a worthwhile stop for supporters looking to experience another chapter in the expanding landscape of American soccer.
