DePauw University is preparing for a major transformation to replace its 84-year-old Blackstock Stadium. The university in Greencastle, Indiana, announced an $80 million gift from an anonymous graduate, which will fund the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium and athletics complex.

The new facility aims to enhance the gameday atmosphere for both football and track and field fans by offering upgraded seating and modern amenities. The stadium will also include improved locker rooms, enhanced concession stands, and accessible facilities to ensure all fans can enjoy the events comfortably.

Opened in 1941, Blackstock Stadium has been the cornerstone for DePauw’s athletic programs and has witnessed countless moments over the decades. The stadium co-hosts the Monon Bell Classic with nearby rival Wabash College. The annual football game was first held in 1890.

The Tigers have played on the same site since 1923, when Mr. and Mrs. Ira Blackstock gifted $25,000 for an athletic field for football and track and field. That stadium was known as Blackstock Athletic Field when it first opened, and it was not until 1941 that Mrs. Blackstock gifted $80,000 towards the construction of grandstands in memory of her late husband, who graduated from DePauw in 1886. Before the construction of Blackstock Stadium, the football program played at McKeen Field from 1895 to 1922.

The anticipated completion of the new stadium is set for 2028, establishing a vibrant space for community gatherings and sporting events. This investment reflects DePauw University’s commitment to providing its student-athletes and fans with the best possible environment to thrive both on and off the field.

Demolition of the Blackstock Stadium is scheduled to begin in August 2026, making way for a new era for DePauw athletics.
