The Reason Why Bottles Aren't Served at Ballparks

Tonight's MLB Wild Card playoff game showed teams everywhere why serving beverages in bottles or cans is a bad idea. Many fans have asked why concessionaires will often keep a bottle cap when serving beer or soda.

In case you missed it, an infield fly rule was called late by the left field umpire Sam Holbrook in the 8th inning of the Cardinals/Braves elimination Wild Card game. Braves fans showed their anger by delaying the game for 18 minutes. The Braves played the game under protest from that point.

The reason for taking the cap off of bottles is usually explained by claiming that with the cap, the bottle can be used as a weapon. The playoff game at Turner Field in Atlanta will give many teams the fodder they need to either begin to enforce or maintain similar rules.
