The debate on which college football venue is the most intimidating for visiting teams is always intense and every major venue crowns their stadium as the undisputed champ. What has been missing from the debate, however, is some data to add to the discussion. Stadium Journey has developed the Home Field Advantage Ranking to compare the impact of stadiums on the home team based on several categories. The categories include home win/loss record, average attendance, the Stadium Journey "Fans" score, attendance based on percentage stadium capacity, and points scored vs points allowed. For a full description of how the rankings were determined, click here.

We have separated Division I-FBS into two ranking lists: BCS and Mid-Major. Check out where your favorite BCS-level stadium ranked for having the strongest home field advantage in the 2012 season below:

  1. Michigan Stadium - Home of the Michigan Wolverines

    Total Score: 4.6376

    Home W/L:1.5000
    Average Attendance:1.0000
    Percent Capacity Attendance:0.6667
    Stadium Journey Fan Score:1.0000
    Points Scored/Allowed Score:0.4709

In 2012, there simply wasn't a better home field advantage in college football than Michigan Stadium. Michigan was at the top of every ranking category except the points scored vs. allowed section (13th in BCS). At first sight of the famous "Go Blue" banner, opposing teams know taking home a 'W' will be no easy feet. "The Big House" boasted an above capacity crowd and led the nation in average attendance with 112,252 per home game. Michigan was also undefeated at home with a 6-0 record, outscoring opponents 231-96.

  2. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Home of the Florida Gators

    Total Score: 4.5958

    Home W/L:1.5000
    Average Attendance:0.9274
    Percent Capacity Attendance:0.6595
    Stadium Journey Fan Score:1.0000
    Points Scored/Allowed Score:0.5088

Fear the Chomp! One of the great college football fan traditions is the Gator Chomp at University of Florida home games. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and the Chomp are second up on our ranking list. The Florida Gators were 7-0 at home this season including impressive wins over LSU and South Carolina. Florida averaged 87,597 per home game and outscored opponents 187-58.

  3. Ohio Stadium - Home of the Ohio State Buckeyes

    Total Score: 4.5927

    Home W/L:1.5000

    Stadium Journey Fan Score:1.0000
    Points Scored/Allowed Score:0.4341

Ohio State may have been disqualified for post-season play in 2012, but they certainly quality for our list. "The Shoe" was a dominating force for Buckeye football with an undefeated home record including wins over conference rival Nebraska and Michigan. Ohio State averaged 105,330 fans per game and outscored opponents 321-172.

  4. Memorial Stadium - Home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers

Whether it's the high-energy team entrance to "2001: A Space Odyssey" or the waving of towels to "Sandstorm" during key game moments, Williams-Brice Stadium is certainly one of the tougher places for opponents to come in and steal a victory. Rounding out our top 5, the South Carolina Gamecocks were 7-0 at home including a big 35-7 win over Georgia and outscored all opponents by a combined score of 263-95. Williams-Brice had an impressive average attendance of 80,001 in 2012.

The Fighting Irish were an undefeated 6-0 at home this season outscoring opponents 137-76 which included key victories over Michigan and Stanford.
