When it comes to minor league baseball, the game itself is not always the draw for many fans. Teams need to be inventive with their promotions, and provide a unique experience. More and more, this means that the concession menu is the place where minor league ball clubs will try to differentiate themselves.

For the fourth consecutive year, the West Michigan Whitecaps have invited fans to help choose a unique concession item to be served at Fifth Third Ballpark. With ten inventive items to choose from, the team has certainly made the selection a challenge. Items range from healthy to absurdly unhealthy, but the creativity of the menu items is unquestionably original.

Possible items include a taco shell made of bacon, a cod hot dog, deep-fried Peeps, Spam fries, and the walking salad. Voting on the concession items run through March 5th. For a complete list of the nominees, visit the West Michigan Whitecaps website.

I'll be casting my vote for "The Bad Joke" for its ridiculous name, and because I want to find out what "duck bacon" tastes like. The item is described as "A corn dog, covered in cheese, with two strips of duck bacon, all on a bun. One of the tastiest things you will ever have. Why is it a Bad Joke? Well it's a bit corny... a bit cheesy... and it will quack you up! It's one joke you are sure to remember."

Matt Timon, Whitecaps Director of Food & Beverage, said in a press release that the food contest is extremely popular. "This is a promotion we really look forward to every year," Timon said. "Our fans want to be involved in helping shape the menu. They've come up with some creative ideas, and whether they're using the contest to let us know what they want to eat while at a Whitecaps game or they're using it to show off their chef skills...either way, the fans win."

Do you like the idea of allowing fans to choose the concessions? What's the best "strange" item that you've ever had at a sporting event?
