Comparing the US and New Zealand Sporting Event Experience

Comparing the US and New Zealand Sporting Event Experience

by Jeff Cheshire - Mar 05, 2015 4:40 PM EST

There are more than just 7,800 miles of ocean between the American and New Zealand sporting landscapes. Swap baseball, football, basketball and ice hockey for rugby union, cricket, netball and rugby league. Each sport brings with it its own traditions, and mixing these with the local cultures of the two countries, there is a different feel to attending a sporting event in each nation. Yet much remains the same as well.

After spending six weeks in the USA and attending 15 different sporting events, it seemed comparing these experiences with those of New Zealand sporting events would be an interesting exercise. Of course every stadium is different, so the comparison relies on a lot of generalizations. Nevertheless, using the Stadium Journey's familiar FANFARE system, we will endeavour to contrast the sporting experience in both countries, although will not suggest that one is better than the other.

The Harlem Globetrotters Experience

The Harlem Globetrotters Experience

by Aaron S. Terry - Mar 05, 2015 10:04 AM EST

The only time the Washington Generals have ever beaten the Harlem Globetrotters was on January 5, 1971 in Martin, Tennessee. Down by 12 points with two minutes left to go, due to a few too many on-court antics, the Globetrotters rallied but fell 100-99 when the Generals (who actually played in New Jersey Reds uniforms that night) scored with only seconds left. During the 1971-72 season the Generals rotated uniforms between the New Jersey Reds, Boston Shamrocks, Baltimore Rockets, and Atlantic City Seagulls, which was a ploy to make it look like the Globetrotters played more than just one team. The win helped the Generals avoid a 2,500-game losing streak, capping their number of consecutive losses at 2,495 - but the Generals have not beaten the Globetrotters since.
