The Highlanders of the New Jersey Institute of Technology play their home games in the former home of the Newark Bears. As you may expect, the crowds don't come close to filling the park, and the atmosphere suffers accordingly. Review by Special Correspondent Matt Fiedler.

After the 2013 season, the Newark Bears of the Can-Am League folded, ending 16 years of independent baseball, with all but the inaugural campaign played at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Founded by former Yankee Rick Cerone, a Newark native, the Bears did all the right things at first, attracting famous major leaguers such as Rickey Henderson and Jose Canseco to drive ticket sales along with baseballs. As time passed and the novelty wore off, Cerone sold the team and things went from bad to worse. A league championship in 2007 mattered little as the team ultimately fell victim to its location. As detailed in a Stadium Journey article last year, Newark's reputation prevented a retail base from establishing itself in the vicinity of the ballpark, and with several other area teams competing for limited entertainment dollars, fans chose more convenient destinations to spend their money.
