The Kentucky Derby and the Mint Julep

The Kentucky Derby and the Mint Julep

by Gregory Priebe - May 02, 2015 10:46 AM EDT

On May 2nd, fans will pack Churchill Downs to celebrate "The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports" - the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. Held every consecutive year since 1875 at Churchill Downs, this one and a quarter mile race (also known as "The Run for the Roses") draws larger crowds than any of the others stakes races. For nearly a century, the Mint Julep has been the official beverage of both Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. The actual bourbon of choice fluctuates over time (this year the honor goes to Old Forester) as does the overall quality of the actual drink served at the track, but all-told over 100,000 juleps are served to the crowds during the annual Derby weekend. The butcher's bill for this feat is around 10,000 bottles of bourbon and over 60,000 pounds of ice.

Luxurious Renovations Await Horse Owners For 141st Kentucky Derby

Luxurious Renovations Await Horse Owners For 141st Kentucky Derby

by Norman Cook - May 01, 2015 9:58 PM EDT

When 150,000 spectators, clad in their Sunday finest, pass through the gates of Churchill Downs for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby they will find all the usual traditions present and accounted for. All the pomp and circumstance they have become accustomed to during the previous 140 "Run for the Roses," from the fancy hats adorning the heads of beautiful southern belles to the signature Old Forester Mint Julep, will be awaiting them.

What they will not find are significant enhancements readily noticeable to the "average" fan. Whereas Churchill Downs has spent a multitude of dollars in recent years enhancing many public areas of the venerable facility, a great number of which relate directly to the experience of the race-goers, this off-season's renovations have been focused on one long-standing area of need: the owner's suites.
