Changing Face of Domestic One Day Cricket in Australia

Changing Face of Domestic One Day Cricket in Australia

by Lloyd Rothwell - Oct 21, 2014 7:56 AM EDT

Cricket has changed a lot in recent years. The rise of Twenty20 cricket is irrefutable. Inevitability, something has had to give. In this case, 50 over cricket is suffering, both at an international level and domestically.

A domestic one day competition first began in Australia in 1969-70 in a knock-out format. Since then the competition has evolved to a round-robin format with the top teams qualifying for a finals series. A succession of naming rights sponsors has ensued, however the competition itself has remained a constant over the years. Experimental rules have often been introduced at this level, along with sponsor gimmicks such as a cash bonus awarded for batsman who hit signs strategically placed around the fence, along with prize money for members of the crowd who successfully catch a six.
