Local Information

The Sky's the Limit for Sky Blue FC

Sky Blue FC are members of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) representing the New York/New Jersey market. The club debuted in 2009 in the erstwhile Women’s Professional Soccer, but went on hiatus when the league ceased operations after the 2011 season. The club joined the NWSL for its inaugural season in 2013. Throughout the club's inception, it has called Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey home.

Yurcak Field seats 5,000 people and was constructed in 1994 to serve as home to both the university’s soccer and lacrosse programs. The stadium consists of bleacher seating on one side, a small scoreboard in the corner, and a building underneath that houses concessions. It’s design mimics that of a larger scale high school and features a natural grass pitch that some regard as one of the best in the league.

After the US Women’s National Team captured its third World Cup championship in Vancouver, Canada in 2015, there could be an influx of interest in the women’s professional game across the country. The soccer savvy state of New Jersey could be an ideal location to house and showcase the talents of some of the best soccer players in the world.

What is FANFARE?

The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:

  • Food & Beverage
  • Atmosphere
  • Neighborhood
  • Fans
  • Access
  • Return on Investment
  • Extras

Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".

Food & Beverage    3

There is one main concourse that offers food and soft drinks near the entrance to the stadium. The selection is small, but hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, nachos, Cracker Jacks, candy, chips, bottled soda, and water all sell between $3-$4.

A better option might be adjacent to the concession stand at the grill where customers can choose from combo platters consisting of one meat and two sides for $10. The meats are grilled sausages with peppers and onions, grilled or barbecue chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and ribs. The sides are macaroni and cheese, pasta salad, baked beans, and corn on the cob. The portions are fair and the food is fresh off the grill.

Alcohol sales are limited to the popular beer garden located on the field near the south end corner of the field. The section is for fans 21 years or older and features tall cans of Yuengling, Leinenkugel, Smith & Forge Hard Cider, Miller Lite, and Narragansett, as well as small cans of Sierra Nevada IPA. All of the drinks sell for a reasonable $6-$8.

Atmosphere    3

Yurcak Field is located on the campus of Rutgers, and there is definitely a college like atmosphere before the match. Fans park on the grass lots, cook, drink, and play a few games of cornhole or Kan Jam. You will also see a few faithful kicking a soccer ball to one another. Fans walk up to the small ticket booth outside the fenced entrances and wait their turn to enter.

Once inside there is a lot of activity taking place on the small main concourse of the stadium that includes bathrooms, concession stand, merchandise tent, and local vendor tables. The area is very congested as fans make their way to the main grandstand seating area. The small merchandise tent includes shirts, programs, scarves, and caps.

Being that the stadium is the home to both Rutgers men's and women's soccer programs, there is strong presence of red and black from banners, yearly awards, and former alumni photos of notable players such as Alexi Lalas and Carli Lloyd throughout the stadium. The colors of sky blue and navy blue are rarely found throughout the stadium.

Neighborhood    3

The stadium is situated on the Busch campus in Piscataway near the High Point Solutions Stadium. However, you are not too far away from the main campus in New Brunswick. The city is not your typical Big 10 college town and many parts are somewhat seedy.

When in town, grab yourself one of the famous Fat Cat sandwiches that are available at various locations on Easton Ave or at portable grease trucks throughout campus. The sandwiches come in almost 32 varieties and all feature french fries, lettuce, and tomatoes served on a sub roll with either chicken tenders, hamburgers, cheesesteak, gyro meat, cheese, white sauce, or pork roll. The varieties are endless and the names range from Fat Dad, Fat Fredo, Fat Delta U, and Fat Elvis.

There are some great restaurants located in New Brunswick. Some of the best include Sahara Restaurant for middle eastern cuisine, Hansel 'n Griddle for homemade soups, wraps, and salads, and The Frog and The Peach for American cuisine.

Old Bay Restaurant offers fabulous Cajun and Creole food, while Catherine Lombardi features homemade Italian classics. A personal favorite is Stuff Yer Face, a local institution offering pizza, burgers, and mammoth stromboli.

Fans    4

It is evident that the women's game has struck a chord with the American public with a record crowd in attendance at Yurcak Field a week after the World Cup finals. The real fans of the team are the legions of little girls holding banners and sporting USA soccer jerseys. They are the future of the sport. The adults in attendance are also strong supporters and they equally are focused on the action on the field. The team has a supporters group called Cloud 9 that does an admirable job of getting the crowd cheering throughout the game.

Access    2

There are two major highways to connect you to Yurcak Field depending on what part of the state you are in. The stadium is not situated directly off of a major interstate or highway, but I-287 connects you from the Garden State Parkway and I-78, while Route 18 connects motorists from US-1 and the New Jersey Turnpike to the campus and stadium. Since all games are played on the weekends, there is little chance of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on either 287 or Rt. 18.

It would be wise to use GPS, but there is a lot of signage to the High Point Solutions Stadium (which is near Yurcak Field) so visitors should not get too lost. The parking is free and easy to navigate once inside the lots. However, inside the stadium, the lines are long for concessions and the concourse can become highly packed with multiple tents grouped closely together near the entrance of the stadium.

Return on Investment    2

The team offers Bleacher Seating ($19), Field Seating ($25), and On Field Seating ($60) - an average cost of $34.67. The prices might come across a bit on the higher side, but they are comparable to a few other markets in the league. However, you can find lower tickets in many other NWSL venues. The Field Seats are white folding chairs on the opposite side of the grandstand on the ground level of the field. This is the closest view to the action with plenty of legroom, but the $60 price tag makes it more costly than what they are worth.

There could be a lot of more options once inside the stadium for ticket prices and perhaps a little something more for kids and families. For the type of facility, the prices could be lowered down just a bit to bring in the casual soccer fan to a Sky Blue match.

Extras    1

The beer garden is a very popular destination at the stadium. A simple addition to the stadium that more than likely made a few attendees happy based on the numbers during the contest.

Final Thoughts

Yurcak Field is a vapid stadium that is suitable for college athletics. However, when transforming it into the home of Sky Blue FC, the team could take a few lessons from other soccer clubs that play in college venues (Indy Eleven comes to mind). Why not add activities for the kids (inflatable rides, face painting, balloon sculpturing, etc.), spread out the tents and tables to create more room in the overcrowded concourse section, offer a few more portable food stands to ease up lines, and pitch those gorgeous blue jerseys that the team wears on the field? There should also be more Sky Blue FC colors and banners inside the stadium. A few simple additions could enhance the game day experience.
