Westminster Christian’s arena and gymnasium is one that has seen history, and one that is a stable for local high school sports fans to visit at least once. The home of the Warriors hosts the school's basketball, wrestling, and volleyball games throughout the year, and every game is a pulse-pounding experience. The fans are known for being loud and passionate, and the school’s facilities are top notch.
The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:
Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".
The food options are limited. It is high school, after all, and not a professional sports venue. Most basketball games have a small trailer that is set up as a concession stand. Here, hot dogs, burgers, candy, and beverages can be purchased by fans for a low price (you certainly won't get a burger and Coke for less than $5 at a Heat game any time soon). When basketball games coincide with a baseball or football game, a second concession stand is just a short walk away from the arena.
There is no arena quite like Westminster Christian. The Warriors are always cheering on their team, and no matter what sport it is, the arena is always packed full of students and fans alike. Alumni flock back to the school as if it were a college, and they reminisce about the good old days when they were at the school.
Inside, the walls echo with both history of the past and the history of the present as the fans' cheers rip through you with every basket made. You cannot help but get caught up in the energy of the moment alongside everyone else.
The inside of the arena is always clean and shiny, and the parking lot has a clean look to it. The campus is full of beautiful trees and foliage, and has a relaxing feel. In short, this is what a high school campus in South Florida should look and feel like, and the feeling inside the arena matches that exactly.
Westminster Christian is located right in the middle of one of the nicest areas of South Florida. Palmetto Bay and Pinecrest are what some refer to as the outer edges of Miami's upscale Coral Gables and Coconut Grove neighborhoods. The houses are big, properly maintained, and the cars usually fancy. The people who live there are also generally kind and welcoming, a rarity in Miami. One can definitely feel relaxed in the area and not worry too much about something happening.
Hotels are not far, with Dadeland just a few minutes' drive north on US 1. Food options are plentiful just west of campus, as well, with various strip shops and even The Falls mall less than a 10 minute drive away. The school often does fund-raising events at the local Chipotle several times throughout the year.
The Warrior faithful for basketball are among the best in high school athletics. They roar and chant with the game, taunting the other teams and exploding with excitement with every made basket. For the full Warrior effect, a trip to see Westminster take on archrival Palmer Trinity School in any sport would be worth the price of admission of a professional sporting event. Parents are usually pretty well-behaved, too, making for a very family friendly experience not often found in some youth sporting events.
Getting to Westminster Christian School requires either a knowledge of the area or a GPS with solid directions. The campus is almost to the far eastern shores of South Florida, situated less than a mile from the coast. This means driving there from US 1 or the Florida Turnpike will require maneuvering your way through neighborhood streets, if you aren't familiar with the area. Lodging is scarce in the immediate vicinity of the school. You will have to travel to where US 1 and the Turnpike meet, a good 10-15 minute drive, not including traffic, to find a hotel for you to stay.
The price of admission to a Westminster Christian event at their gymnasium is always low, compared to most others. Less than $10 can get you a game ticket, a hot dog, and a soda all at once, so the price of getting the full fan experience is also low. The biggest investment would be in how much you drive through South Florida traffic.
Inside of the school'a gymnasium is a sports shrine and hall of fame, showing off the graduated Warriors from Westminster's past that have succeeded both on a high school and a professional level.
Additionally, the walls of the arena itself hold all of the school's athletic championship banners, showing the extent of the team's championship pedigree in practically every athletic field.
Another nice thing is the gymnasium's proximity to the school's other athletic fields. Baseball, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, soccer, football, track, lacrosse, and volleyball all play their respective sports within a short walking distance of the gym.
The experience at Westminster Christian's basketball games is second to none in South Florida athletics. It is hard not to be impressed by the passion of the team's fans, facility, and overall feel during games. If you are looking for a quality high school basketball experience, a trip down to Westminster Christian is definitely worth taking.
