Official Review by Melissa Phillips, Stadium Journey Regional Correspondent
The Resch Center is the home of the Green Bay Gamblers Junior Hockey Team of the United States Hockey League (USHL). The 2013-2014 season is the Gambler’s 20th year in Green Bay. Since joining the USHL in 1994, the Gamblers have been one of the most successful junior hockey teams with two National Championships, four Clark Cups, and five Anderson Cups along with several players advancing to the NHL such as Stanley Cup Champions Ryan Carter (Anaheim/2007), Adam Burish (Chicago/2010), and Matt Greene (Los Angeles/2012).
The team success thrives on the local business community and their fans. Since 1994, over 1.7 million people have passed through the Brown County Veterans Memorial Complex and Resch Center and since 2002 the Gamblers called the Resch Center home. Luxury suites, club seats, and regular arena seating compile a total capacity of 10,500. Average ticket prices start at $9 and can be as high as $120.
The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:
Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".
The Resch Center focuses on Northeastern Wisconsin traditions when it comes to concessions. From popcorn to Wisconsin Cher-Make Brats, you will have a variety to choose from at a reasonable price. Beverages are provided by 7-Up and Anheuser-Busch with the average beer price starting at only $5. Other themed kiosks are situated throughout the arena providing unique cocktails, gourmet coffee, and for the healthier minded folks, smoothies are also available.
Sitting rink side, I had a definite advantage of getting the entire hockey game experience. From the players slamming into the glass in front of you to hearing the chants from the crowd behind you, its a thrilling sports experience. Just be careful to not get your beverage knocked onto your lap when the players or puck hits the glass in front of you.
Traveling through the concourse of the arena is a breeze. Signage throughout helps you to navigate the area like you have been there before. In passing other fans, you notice the enthusiam and excitement as they are ready to cheer on the Gamblers.
What makes this venue unique, bringing people from all around the state, is its location. Nestled in between the famous Lambeau Field, Ray Nitschke Practice Field, and the Don Hutson Center, fans travel to watch the Gamblers, but also to get a taste of the Home of the Green Bay Packers. So not only do fans get to experience high powered hockey action, they can take in the sites around the Resch Center upon entering and exiting the event. The family can continue their fun by staying at the Tundra Lodge Resort and Water Park which is just a short drive from the arena. If food is on your mind, the Resch Center is partnered with Curly's Pub located inside the Atrium of Lambeau Field, Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, Subway, and Grazies.
This energetic, fun-filled family atmosphere brings out the best in all hockey fans or first time hockey gamers. From ACE, the mascot, scouring through the crowds giving out hugs or goofing off with fans to the variety of fan participation activities, fans of all ages can get involved. Chuck the Puck and the Teddy Bear Toss allows fans to win Gambler merchandise or free tickets. The School House Kid Zone (capacity of 40) opens one hour prior to the drop of the puck for children 14 and under to enjoy crafting and games with ACE, the Mascot.
Access to the Resch Center is simple. Just follow the signs to Lambeau Field once in Green Bay. Parking is located in the Lambeau Field Parking lot located off of Lombardi Avenue and Oneida Street. Average cost for parking is $10-$20. Once inside the Resch Center, navigating throughout the hallways is made easy with several attendants to guide you to your seats or concessions. Handicap accessibility is available as well.
Ticket prices are unbelievably cheap starting at $9 making it easy for a large group or a family to enjoy the game. Sitting rink side, one pays anywhere from $40-$60. Then prices trend upward of $120 for the premium seats such as Luxury Suites or Club Seats.
As for concessions, the prices are very reasonable again making it much easier for a large group or family to have a great time for less amount out of pocket.
As you are walking towards the Resch Center take a minute to pay tribute to the U.S. Troops as you pass by the memorial statue. This 50-year-old arena continues to be a viable, economic generator of events and a vital part of the Brown County Veterans Memorial Complex. With a 7,500 seat capacity, the Brown County Arena hosts more than 95,000 attendees per year. Events currently held in this venue include Sesame Street Live, Monster Trucks, WIAA sporting events, Beja Shrine Circus, concerts, trade shows and hockey practice. Another attribute of the Resch Center is The Meyer Theatre which hosts hundreds of event days and thousands of attendees per year. The Meyer Theatre is home to several community organizations including dance studios, symphonies and Let Me Be Frank Productions. Events include concerts, theatre and comedy.
All in all, the Resch Center is filled with down home tradition. From Gambler Hockey Championships to hosting other events such as concerts, ballets, and Green Bay Phoenix Basketball, any family or fans of all sorts can have a wonderful time in such an exhilarating arena atmosphere.
