Official Review by Paul Donaldson, Stadium Journey Regional Correspondent
Ragin’ Cajuns softball flies under the radar on the Louisiana sports scene, but should be heralded as one of the premier family sports experiences in the state. The UL-Lafayette softball team has been a pillar of excellence over the past 20+ years, having made six College World Series appearances and earning continuous berths in the NCAA Tournament since 1999.
The Ragin’ Cajuns hail Lamson Park as their home turf. For college softball, Lamson Park is quite the facility, boasting a seating capacity of 2,790 and an attendance which is regularly in the top five nationally. The ballpark was constructed in 1985 and has changed names over the years from Lady Cajun Park to Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park, to its current name of Alfred and Helen Lamson Park in 2006 to honor two long-time, faithful supporters.
If you find yourself in the Lafayette area looking for family friendly sports entertainment, be sure to give Ragin’ Cajuns softball at Lamson Park a visit. You won’t be disappointed.
The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:
Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".
Lamson Park provides your typical ballpark concessions with a few extra items.
The expected ballpark concessions include a hot dog ($3), hamburger ($4), nachos ($4), and popcorn ($3). However, there are a few signature items available which aren't listed on the menu which most of the regulars know about, like the crawfish nachos and sausage poboy. Additional snacks are available including a pretzel ($4), sunflower seeds ($3), and candy ($2). Each of these items can be found at the main concessions stand under the grandstand behind home plate.
A few specialty carts are found in the concourse as well, including Dippin' Dots, Sweet Tea / Lemonade, and roasted peanuts stands.
Soda options are headlined by Coca-Cola products in a souvenir cup for $4, bottled Powerade drinks for $4, and Dasani water for $3.
If you're hoping for a cold brew to pair with your softball experience, you're in luck. You'll notice a Budweiser cart in the concourse which sells an assortment of brews for $6/$7 dollars.
Lamson Park provides a family friendly atmosphere for one of the hottest programs in college softball.
Considering that softball games are typically a little shorter in length, they are great for bringing the whole family. You'll see plenty of families gathered together at Lamson. It's also a great place for young female athletes to watch some of the elite softball players across the nation. During the National Anthem, young fans join their favorite player on the field.
You'll find covered chair backs (directly behind home plate) and bleacher style seating in the main grandstand. For afternoon games, the sun sets directly in your view of the field, so you may want to sit on the first baseline side, or consider the outfield bleachers. With tree cover from behind, the outfield seats provide a comfortable view and a little more room to move around.
Lamson Park is located on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette within walking distance from Cajun Field and the Cajundome. Lafayette is a mid-sized city with a booming university area. It's a great location to spend a weekend in Cajun country.
Speaking of Cajun, there's plenty of great local restaurants serving up Louisiana-favorite dishes. Be sure to stop in at Olde Tyme Grocery for a classic po-boy (go for the Olde Tyme Special with ham, turkey, roast beef, and swiss). Johnson's Boucaniere serves up some delicious hot boudin (and also a good pulled pork sandwich).
Continuing with the family friendly theme, be sure to budget time at both the Children's Museum of Acadiana and the Lafayette Science Museum. Just outside of the city, you can catch a tour of the swamp at Cajun Country Swamp Tours in Breaux Bridge.
Lafayette has several great options for lodging. The Hilton Garden Inn (2350 W Congress) is within walking distance of the ballpark and located just across from the Cajundome.
Ragin' Cajun fans are some of the best in all of college softball. Average attendance ranks in or around the top five in the nation each year. Expect a crowd anywhere from 1,300 to 2,000, which actually makes it one of the better attended college ballparks in Louisiana, even considering men's baseball. Fans are loud, loyal and passionate.
As you arrive in the area, you'll make your way to the parking lot on the Cajundome side of Cajun Field. Park there and make the short walk to Lamson Park. You'll quickly get your tickets from the entrance and make your way in through the gates. The concourse is busy but you shouldn't have problems moving around. Restrooms are accessible in the main concourse, and also in left field (for the outfield seating areas).
Tickets are affordable for Ragin' Cajuns softball games at Lamson Park. Chair backs are $12, while the bench backs are $8. General admission seating (including the outfield) is $6. Parking is free and concessions are reasonable.
