Official Review by Tyler Stern, Stadium Journey Special Correspondent
Located in the center of Reading, Pennsylvania is Shirk Stadium. Reading is the home of the Division III Albright Lions. Shirk Stadium is composed of turf and it plays host to football, field hockey, lacrosse, and soccer events. The stadium has been in use since 1925 and underwent renovations in 2005.
The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:
Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".
Shirk Stadium offers a small variety of foods and drinks. The concession stand in located in the south end of the stadium. It offers a variety of food including hot dogs, hamburgers, the "Albright Dog," and nachos. Drinks vary from sodas to Gatorade and water. The concession stand offers low prices to accommodate fans at each event.
The stadium at capacity holds 5,000 spectators. During most football events, the home side is filled almost to full capacity while the away side hosts a few traveling fans from the opposing team. Cheerleaders stand towards the northern end zone. Fans and parents from around the Reading area tailgate before the game before entering just a few minutes before gametime. Fans enjoy a good view from their seats and enjoy one of the best Division III stadiums in the country.
The area surrounding Shirk Stadium offers a few gas stations and a couple diners. There is nothing special except the close proximity of the Albright College campus. Just a few minutes away is a bad area of the city which I was recommended not to travel through. Surrounding the stadium are mostly houses with a tiny restaurant here and there.
The fans generally pack the stands at Shirk Stadium. It is a good scene for a spectator in Reading, PA. There are 3,000 seats on the home side of the field, with the remaining 2,000 seats on the visitor's side in a stand that was installed during the 2005 renovations.
The stadium is pretty easy to find, located in the northern part of Reading. Parking is easy to find on the side of the road across from the stadium or local parking lots. There is not much around the stadium besides a few restaurants and some housing for students.
I would recommend attending an Albright game if you are in the area. The football team usually has a winning record playing against some of the top Division III teams.
The stadium and surrounding area does not offer too much to do before or after the game. There is nothing that would be considered unique about Shirk Stadium, but don't let that stop you from going to see a game if you're in the area.
