2015 World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt

Between June 11th and June 14th, the 2015 World Cup of Darts took place in Frankfurt, Germany at Eissporthalle Frankfurt. Where normally the ice hockey team of Löwen Frankfurt is fighting for the puck, the summer of 2015 saw the best players of the world show up to demonstrate the best of what the sport of darts has to offer. The World Cup of Darts is the championship for teams, where the best two players from each country try to win for their homeland.

The inaugural competition took place in England in 2010. From 2012-2014, the event moved to Hamburg, Germany. The 2015 competition saw England take home the cup over neighboring Scotland. In all, 32 countries sent teams to compete in the 2015 tournament.

What is FANFARE?

The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:

  • Food & Beverage
  • Atmosphere
  • Neighborhood
  • Fans
  • Access
  • Return on Investment
  • Extras

Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".

Food & Beverage    2

There are only two concessions for the crowd, and this is really not enough. While the main concession is completely filled to overflowing, the second concession looks a little bored. Perhaps better signage to encourage flow is needed in future years.

There is not much variety of food. The menu includes sausages, pretzels, meatloaf and cheese straws. The quality is acceptable, and the prices are reasonable (approximately $3.50 for a sausage).

The main thing to drink is beer, which is good for the spectators of an event like this. The atmosphere improves during the evening as the drinks continue to flow. You also can get water, Coke and the Frankfurt specialty "Abbelwoi," a king of cider.

Atmosphere    5

This event produces a great atmosphere, and it just gets better and better during the evening. Dart enthusiasts love to sing and make a huge party, and many of them wear creative and funny costumes. In 2015 there was a group of fans from Liverpool, UK, with every guy wearing a different costume from Star Wars with Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, a Stormtrooper and so on, having fun, singing all the way and drinking a lot of beer.

The event lasts for four days and the atmosphere gets better and better every day. When one of the dart players is getting the maximum score on their turn - 180 points with three darts - the event center seems to explode.

Neighborhood    1

Immediately in the neighborhood of the event, there is nothing really to do or to see. There's a huge parking lot in front of the Eissporthalle, but during the 2015 tournament the space was taken up by a circus - so there was not much room for parking cars. You can go to the city of Frankfurt by subway, but near the Eissporthalle there is not much to do.

Fans    5

Most of the fans sit facing the dartboard - having a party and singing most of the time. Because of the beer they are often singing more and louder during the evening. Dart fans love to wear costumes and the crazier, the better. The fans cry and cheer if some of the professional players get a good score.

Access    2

There is only one gate for all of the spectators and that is not nearly not enough. Most people had to wait more than half an hour to enter. The earlier you entered the Eissporthalle, the better places you got. Because of missing parking lots it was extremely difficult to arrive early enough, so most people who arrived over an hour before the start were a little bit disappointed. Once you enter the interior, everything is fine, but the time to get in was horrible in 2015.

Return on Investment    4

Tickets are very cheap so fans get a lot of fun for a small amount of money. The first day it costs about $10 for the first round of the World Cup. The final day was about $25, but you really get a lot of fun, and it is great to see a lot of crazy people. Darts is not as easy as it often looks like, and certainly more difficult than your neighborhood pub game, but these are the best players in the world, and they make it look easy.

Extras    4

There is a little free programme on every table introducing the teams and the rules which is very helpful for fans.

When ordering drinks you get a special cup with the best players on it.

For people who enjoy playing darts, there is a stand selling a lot of equipment.

Every spectator gets a special sign from World Cup of Darts where he could write the name of his favourite player or greeting to someone he loves.

Final Thoughts

Going to watch the World Cup of Darts is a great idea. Though there were no good players from home team of Germany in 2015, it was still a great event. Most of the best players in the world are here, and seeing them play darts is an awesome experience. The atmosphere is fantastic, and hopefully this event will take place in Frankfurt in future years.
