Official Review by Jearold Hersey, Stadium Journey Special Correspondent
While San Antonio has become known as basketball city due to the dominance of the Spurs, there is college basketball in the city as well. Newly added to the Southland Conference for the 2013-14 season, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Cardinals play on campus at the Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center.
The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:
Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".
The snacks available are mostly convenience store fare with some non-packaged items. Options include: $3 hot dogs, $4 nachos, $2 chips, $3 bottled sodas, $3 bottled water, and $4 energy drinks. The food and beverage selection is reminiscent of a high school game.
The high school feel extends to the gym as well. The venue has bricks styling inside and out and has a cozy feel. The venue is similar to a large high school gym with bleacher seating along the baselines and none behind the baskets. The bleachers facing the bench feature four rows of theater-style chair seating.
The UIW Dance Team is positioned under the basket and Red the Cardinal interacts with fans along the sideline. Hip-hop songs by Migos and Drake are the soundtrack for the pregame. The 'Convo' (as I heard some students call it) can hold 2,000 spectators and there were a few hundred fans in attendance during my most recent visit.
The UIW campus is very nice and on the Broadway Corridor north of downtown San Antonio. It's next to Brackenridge Park, which is home to the San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium. The San Antonio Country Club is also nearby. There are shops and restaurants in the area and quick access to US Route 281.
The UIW fans are spirited and heckle the opponents during free throws and after fouls.
Getting to the arena is a bit of a headache because of road construction on Hillebrand and Broadway, the major cross-streets for the campus. I had to drive through Brackenridge Park to regain access to Hillebrand and enter campus. The Convocation Center is on the western part of campus and is surrounded by other athletic facilities. There is no charge for parking.
Attending a game UIW game is a good value. Currently the team is very competitive in their conference and the tickets and food options are inexpensive.
UIW is in upward transition to Division I. They will have full membership in 2017.
