Local Information

Nest of Champions

This is an edifice every Akwa Ibom indigene is proud of, a brand new stadium which sits on 48 hectares of land and was opened on the 7th of November, 2014.

It has been proposed that the two local football clubs (Akwa Starlet & Akwa United) playing in the top leagues in Nigeria will now use the Akwa Ibom Stadium as their home ground. Akwa Starlet compete in the Nigeria National League and are on the verge of gaining promotion to the Premier League.

Akwa United play in the elite league in Nigeria, the Nigeria Professional Football League. Fans of Akwa United will certainly be glad to see local football games in the new stadium.

The stadium has a capacity of 30,000 and was modeled after Allianz Arena. It was officially opened by the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, after which a football match between Nigeria and Ghana was played.

The outer covering of the $96 million stadium encircles the whole spectator stand and adds to the beauty. Akwa Ibom Stadium can host either soccer or track and field events.

The facility boasts a bulletproof VIP stand, and top notch media facilities. The experience of the two scoreboards gives you a unique experience compared to other stadiums in Nigeria. Akwa Ibom Stadium also has a standby power supply system, helipad, ambulance bay, and two dressing rooms.
