Banner Island Ballpark to Host 2013 WCC Baseball Championship

By David Mortimer -- June 16, 2012 12:47 PM EDT

In 2012, the West Coast Conference was one of only three conferences without a season-ending baseball tournament. That will change in 2013.

In a June 15 press release, the WCC announced that Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, CA, will host the conference's 2013 Baseball Championship, scheduled for May 23-25. The tournament will feature the WCC's top four teams, marking the first time the conference has attempted a four-team, neutral site championship series format.

WCC officials worked closely with the Stockton Ports, the park's current tenants, and the Stockton Convention and Visitors Bureau to secure the deal.

"This is a big move for the West Coast Conference and we're excited to be a part of it," said Tim Pasisz, Director of Business Development for the Ports. "We're proud to announce that Banner Island Ballpark is the WCC Baseball Championship's new home."

Recent aggressive expansion by the WCC appears to have prompted the move. BYU just completed its first WCC season, and University of the Pacific will enter the conference in 2013-14.

"We believe this event is a great vehicle to introduce the West Coast Conference to Stockton and the Central Valley, an important new market for us with the University of the Pacific joining our conference," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich.

A hypothetical 2012 WCC Baseball Championship would have featured Pepperdine, San Diego, Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount, based on standings available at WCCSports.com.
