On February 7, 1998, the Dallas Stars retired #7 in honor of Center Neal Broten. It was the first number retired by the Stars organization since their move to Dallas in 1993. It remains the only number they have retired in Dallas.

Broten's jersey hangs alongside Bill Goldworthy's #8 and Bill Masterton's #19, but Broten is the only one among the three who actually played for the franchise in Dallas.
In his career, Broten appeared in two NHL all-star games, and scored 923 career points. Broten is also notable as being the only player to have won a NCAA Championship, Olympic Gold Medal, and NHL Stanley Cup.
Fans would imagine that Mike Modano, who retired as a member of the Stars in September 2011, will be the next former Star to have his number placed amongst the great Stars in the sky of the American Airlines Center.
